Why Forklift Training is Crucial in Ontario:

In Ontario, forklift training is a legal requirement for employers to ensure safe operation within the workplace. Here’s why it’s essential:

  • Regulatory Compliance: The Occupational Health and Safety Act mandates forklift operator training, and non-compliance could lead to fines, penalties, or legal action.

  • Safety: Well-trained operators know the correct handling and maneuvering techniques, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries.

  • Enhanced Productivity: Properly trained forklift operators perform tasks more efficiently, reducing equipment downtime and minimizing damage to goods.

  • Cost Savings: Training helps reduce the costs associated with workplace accidents, equipment repairs, and insurance claims.

Forklift Load Lifting Tips:

Proper forklift operation involves more than just driving the machine. Keep these tips in mind to ensure safe lifting and handling of loads:

  • Always check that the load you’re lifting is within the forklift’s capacity rating.

  • Ensure the load is balanced and evenly distributed on the pallet.

  • If the load is unbalanced, place the heavier side toward the base of the forks.

  • Inspect the pallet for any signs of damage before lifting.

  • For bagged goods, stack them securely to avoid accidents during lifting.

  • When visibility is obstructed by large loads, travel in reverse and use a guide.

  • Avoid lifting or carrying more than one pallet at a time.

  • Always use a load backrest when carrying tall loads.

Types of Forklifts We Train On:

  • Counterbalance Forklift (Electric or Propane): The most common type, used in warehouses and industrial settings.

  • Narrow Aisle Reach: Perfect for tight spaces, with lifting capacities up to 4,500 lbs.

  • Swing Reach: Optimizes storage density; requires specific training for safe operation.

  • Walkie/Walkie Rider: Compact, easy-to-maneuver, and ideal for low-level picking tasks.

  • High Capacity Forklifts: Lifting capacities from 19,000 to over 100,000 lbs, designed for heavy-duty work.

  • Zoom Boom: Designed for outdoor use in rough terrain, with lifting capacities up to 46,000 lbs.

Forklift Safety Tips:

  • Always comply with OHSA regulations and your employer's health and safety guidelines.

  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Perform regular pre-operation checks and inspections.

  • Follow equipment manuals and manufacturer instructions.

  • Ensure you’re trained and authorized before operating any forklift.
